Sometimes it is less expensive and easier to buy something existing that might already be finished the way you'd like it to be or even start fresh with a new build.
Consider the following:
Get your Minnesota mortgage financing in place FIRST-getting prequalified makes things tangible for you and the contractor. Knowing your budget allows the designer, architect and contractor to make appropriate recommendations the first time.
Compare the cost of the project to proceeding with an existing or newly built home. Sometimes you get better value for your dollar by not remodeling. You might be able to save both time and money when purchasing an existing home or building new.
Read remodel research articles-like those provided on this site. Become educated about the costs and process. Unrealistic expectations will lead to disappointments.
Work with a Minnesota licensed building contractor. Check your MN contractor out with the state commerce department licensing division and with the BBB for any complaints. Ask for client references and go view their work first hand. You are going to be working very closely for the next 3-12 months-make the right choice.
Plan a budget and time line. Make sure both are feasible. Plan on time delays and cost overages. It is entirely possible for you to spend 20-30% more than anticipated and have the project take twice as long. Expect it to happen. You will probably make some changes that have been unaccounted for and as we know "life happens".
